EMA sets November 2026 cut-off for year-end type I variation filings

Marketing authorisation holders seeking a decision in 2026 on type IA annual updates, individual type IA and type IA IN variations, and super-groupings must file with the European Medicines Agency no later than 20 November 2026, the Amsterdam-based regulator has said in new procedural guidance for human medicines. The agency said the cut-off is needed so it can confirm the validity of submissions within the 30-day window set by Article 14 of Commission Regulation (EC) No 1234/2008.

Key facts

What happens to late submissions?

The agency said filings that arrive after the 20 November date will still be handled, but warned that the outcome may slip into January 2027. For type IB variations and mixed groupings of type IBs and type IAs, the advice is to file by 30 November 2026 so that the procedure can begin before the year ends; applications received from 1 December 2026 onwards may only get under way in January 2027.

The European Medicines Agency also said it expects a large volume of type IA annual updates in the final quarter of 2026, which could affect its usual timelines for validating type I variations and answering queries on both type IA and type IB files. It advised applicants to submit type IB procedures as early as possible to secure a 2026 start.

Why the dates may shift

The agency described the published dates as tentative and said they would depend on how many submissions it receives and how complex they are. The guidance covers variations to marketing authorisations, including extensions.

Marketing authorisation holders with procedural or regulatory questions on these human-medicine procedures can raise a ticket through the EMA Service Desk, choosing the "Business Services" tab and the "Human Regulatory" category, then the "Post-authorisation - Human" subcategory and the relevant variation option.

What guidance is available?

The agency pointed applicants preparing their filings to supporting material on its website, including a March 2025 revision of its questions-and-answers document on when to submit type IA and type IA IN variations. Other documents cited are the agency's practical guidance on the application form for centralised type IA and IB variations (EMA/233564/2014 Rev.5), a pre-notification check for type IA and type IA IN variations (EMA/746161/2014 Rev. 1.0) and a pre-notification check for type IB variations (EMA/413829/2015 Rev. 1.0).

The notice applies across the European Union's centralised marketing authorisation system, which lets a single application cover the whole EU market. The timetable gives pharmaceutical companies roughly a month before the agency's year-end shutdown to file the least complex categories of post-authorisation changes.

What happens next

Companies planning filings for 2026 now have two dates to work to: 20 November 2026 for type IA annual updates, individual type IA and type IA IN variations and super-groupings, and 30 November 2026 for type IB variations and type I/IB groupings. The agency will close from 22 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, with processing resuming after that date.
