Apple has confirmed that its new Siri AI will be available on older Apple TV 4K models through a free software update later this year. The update will bring the more advanced, personalised assistant to the second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K, both of which launched before the new fourth-generation model. The news comes alongside the announcement of the Apple TV 4K (4th generation), which begins shipping on November 13, 2026.
A free upgrade for older devices
The release note states: “Siri AI is available as a beta on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), and is available at launch in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK in English.” That means owners of the 2021 second-generation and 2022 third-generation models will not need to buy new hardware to access the feature. The software update, expected to be tvOS 27.2, is likely to roll out around the time the new model ships, though Apple has not given a specific date.
What Siri AI adds
Siri AI is designed to offer a more robust personal assistant experience, accessible via the Siri Remote or the box’s far-field microphones. It brings broader knowledge and personal context, allowing users to ask for things like an album a friend recommended weeks ago or details about a specific episode they were watching. Apple has not said that the features will be limited on older models, despite their less powerful hardware. The assistant may run slightly slower on older devices, but the experience is expected to remain strong. Beyond personal queries, Siri AI also provides richer recommendations and suggestions when searching for content.
New remote works with older boxes
Alongside the new Apple TV 4K, Apple has introduced an updated Siri Remote that includes a speaker to help locate it and supports Precision Finding via ultra-wideband with a compatible iPhone. The remote is available for $59 and works with previous-generation Apple TVs. Apple is already taking orders for the updated remote.
The competitive edge
The free update and the optional new remote together could make older Apple TV 4K devices feel fresh again, giving users new ways to interact with their streaming box and find content. For European consumers, the update will initially be available in the UK, but not yet in EU member states. Apple has not indicated when the feature might expand to other European countries. The move reflects a broader trend among tech companies to extend the life of existing hardware through software, rather than pushing consumers to upgrade. As streaming devices become more capable, free feature updates can help manufacturers retain users and compete with rivals. Apple has not yet announced when the update will arrive, but tvOS 27.2 is expected in the coming months. We will report back once Apple confirms a date.
